MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) is a 5.5-year undergraduate medical programme regulated by the National Medical Commission (NMC), consisting of 4.5 years of academic study followed by a mandatory 1-year rotatory internship. India is home to one of the largest networks of medical colleges in the world, spanning government, private, deemed and central universities.

Eligibility Criteria

Who Can Apply for MBBS in India?

Eligibility for MBBS admission in India is set by the National Medical Commission and applies uniformly across government, private, deemed and central universities. Meeting the below criteria makes you eligible to sit for NEET UG and subsequently apply for counselling.

Minimum Marks — General	50% aggregate in PCB

Entrance Exam	NEET UG qualifying score/percentile is mandatory

There is no upper age limit for NEET UG as per the current Supreme Court ruling. Always verify the latest NMC notification for the applicable academic year.

Understanding MBBS Quota Types

MBBS seats in India are allotted through four broad quota categories, each with its own counselling process and eligibility rules.

All India Quota (AIQ)

15% of government college seats, counselled centrally by MCC based purely on NEET rank, open to candidates from any state.

15% of Govt Seats

State Quota

85% of government seats, reserved for domicile students of that state and counselled by the respective State DME/Directorate.

Available in private and deemed colleges; seats are allotted by the college management, based on NEET score plus institution fee criteria.
