After completing MBBS and a compulsory rotating internship, doctors who wish to specialise pursue either an MD (Doctor of Medicine) — a three-year postgraduate degree in non-surgical, clinical or para-clinical subjects — or an MS (Master of Surgery) — a three-year postgraduate degree in surgical specialities. Both are recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and are mandatory for doctors who want to practise as specialists, teach in medical colleges, or pursue a super-speciality DM/MCh course later.
Admission to MD/MS seats across India is done through NEET PG, followed by counselling conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for All India Quota seats, and respective state authorities for state quota seats.
